‘Spiders in the Stable’ that’s what our Christmas drama was called!
We had a Combined Churches Carol Service and Earith Storykeepers put on a drama called: Spiders in the Stable.
There were lots of baby spiders all travelling one way, all looking the same. But hang on, there is one that looks different. Yes, very different, he’s moving in the opposite direction to all the other baby spiders.
That brings us to the point, ermm, Jesus went against the flow. He’s very different – not like all of us who have got lots of bad things in our lives, we do wrong things, we think bad thoughts, we don’t do all the good things we should. Jesus lived a perfect, sinless life. He is very different from us because He is the Son of God!
A congregation takes on it’s own unwritten Christian code of conduct, a unique code of behaviour and appearance. To feel ‘accepted’ you need to follow this unwritten code. Roy (name changed) was naturally jolly and bouncy, but the congregation was more sedate and ‘spiritual’! Soon Roy was getting on everybody’s nerves and this was intensified when the church went away for a few days of camping…
I felt very battered because of Christians behaving badly. God’s work in which we were involved in has been snuffed out! When you cut through the facade it boiled down to being trampled on by a Christian’s selfish ambitions. Why should the work of God be stopped by selfish ambition?
Every congregation will have it’s own view on what makes a sin terrible and what isn’t so bad. For example, a couple started to attend the church, and everyone was pleased to see two new faces in the congregation. Everything was going well, but then they said that they were remarried, and an awful silence descended on the church!…
Jesus the speaking prophet teaches us to see into our own hearts and to see how hollow the things of this world are and he tells us about the excellent unseen heavenly things…

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son. John 3:16-18
