DUNCAN: Hey Freddie, what story are we doing today?

FREDDIE: The one about David and Goliath. Duncan, can you be the narrator?

DUNCAN: Okay.

FREDDIE: Fergus, can you be David’s eldest brother? Zoosch, you can be King Saul. And you, Maurice, can be Goliath.

MAURICE: Oh, great.

FREDDIE: Off you go then, Duncan.

DUNCAN: Soon, the Philistines started attacking Israel, and three of David’s brothers were called up to serve in King Saul’s army. Now, the Philistines stood on one mountain, and King Saul and his army stood on the opposite mountain. The Philistines sent down into the valley a champion called Goliath, a giant of a man, covered in very heavy armour. He carried a long spear and a huge sword.

GOLIATH: Find just one man to fight me to the death. The side that loses will become slaves of the winning side.

DUNCAN: Meanwhile, young David took some food and treats to his three brothers on the mountain top. At the very moment, both armies formed up in their battle lines, shouting their war cries. This was the 40th and final day. Suddenly, the giant Philistine, Goliath, shouted out again:

GOLIATH: Find just one man to come and fight me to the death. The side that loses will become slaves of the winning side.

FREDDIE: What reward will be given to the man who kills this Philistine and takes away this disgrace from Israel? This Philistine dares to mock the living God.

DUNCAN: The soldiers told David that King Saul would give his daughter to be married to the one who would kill the Philistine. King Saul overheard David’s question and called for him. King Saul asked David about the conversation.

FREDDIE: No one needs to be scared anymore. I will go and fight this Philistine.

DUNCAN: King Saul said to David, “You are too young. You can’t fight this well-trained Philistine!”

FREDDIE: I am used to stopping lions and bears from taking my sheep. I have killed both lions and bears, and this Philistine shall be like one of them, because he has mocked the living God. The Lord who saved me from the teeth of the lion and the claws of the bear will deliver me from this Philistine.

DUNCAN: King Saul said to David, “Go! And the Lord God be with you!” Then Saul put his armour on David with his sword, but David could barely move with all that heavy armour.

FREDDIE: I can’t go with these! I’ve never worn armour before! I need to move quickly; this won’t work!

DUNCAN: So David removed it all, and he picked up his staff and sling. Then he picked five smooth stones from the stream and put them in his shepherd’s pouch. The Philistine slowly moved towards David, and when he saw that he was just a young lad, he mocked him.

GOLIATH: What? You are just a baby. Where are your weapons? Am I a dog that you come to me with a stick? I will kill you and feed you to the birds.

FREDDIE: You come to me with a sword and a spear, but I come to you in the name of the Lord God, whom you have mocked. This day, the Lord God will give you into my hands, and I will strike you down and cut off your head, and I will give the dead bodies of the Philistine army to the birds so that the whole world may know that there is one true God. This battle is the Lord’s, and he will give you into our hands.

DUNCAN: The Philistine stepped out to meet David, but David immediately ran towards Goliath, the giant. He quickly put his hand into his shepherd’s bag, pulled out a stone, and put it in his sling. He whizzed the sling around. The stone shot out and struck the Philistine on his forehead just below his helmet.

FREDDIE: Take that, you Philistine. Yeah, God saved us from the Philistines.

DUNCAN: The Philistine army gasped and fled. All of King Saul’s army lost their fear and chased after the Philistines. From that day, David stayed at King Saul’s palace.
