The 7 days of creation – the biblical story.
Follow the authentic biblical story account of how God created the world.
It does not dodge the problematic order of the days of creation.

POLO: We are going to look at the creation of the world.

PRISCILLA: That is at the start of the Bible, in Genesis chapter 1.

POLO: It says, In the beginning, God created the sky and the earth. The earth was empty and had no form. Darkness covered the ocean, and God’s Spirit was moving over the water.

MAURICE: We don’t know how long this took because we have not got to the seven days of creation.

POLO: Then God said:

GOD: Let there be light.

PRISCILLA: Wow, dramatic.

POLO: So the Bible tells us, And there was light. God saw that the light was good. So he divided the light from the darkness. God named the light Day and the darkness Night. Evening passed and morning came. This was the first day.

MAURICE: One day. God seems to be really highlighting the one-day bit.

POLO: Yes, Maurice, let’s see what happens on day two. Then God said:

GOD: Let there be something to divide the water in two.

POLO: So, God made the air to divide the water in two. Some of the water was above the air, and some of the water was below it. God named the air sky. Evening passed and morning came. This was the second day.

PRISCILLA: How can you divide the water in two?

POLO: There is water in the oceans, and clouds carry tons of water. So the water in the clouds is separated from the water in the ocean.

MAURICE: Yes, that is good. It is also interesting that one whole day was taken up with creating the sky, which is the Earth’s atmosphere. The atmosphere is so important for our planet in protecting it. What comes next?

POLO: Then God said:

GOD: Let the water under the sky be gathered together so the dry land will appear.

MAURICE: We know mountains get formed by being pushed up. Now what happens?

POLO: Steady on, Morris. Even you are starting to sound excited. God named the dry land Earth. He named the water that was gathered together Seas. God saw that this was good. Then God said:

GOD: Let the earth produce plants. Some plants will make grain for seeds. Others will make fruit with seeds in it. Every seed will produce more of its own kind of plant.

POLO: And it happened. God saw that all this was good. Evening passed, and morning came. This was the third day.

MAURICE: I love fruits.

POLO: Yes, we know you love fruit. We are now about to start day four, and it is a strange one.

PRISCILLA: A strange one.

POLO: Then God said:

GOD: Let there be lights in the sky to separate day from night. These lights will be used for signs, seasons, days, and years. They will be in the sky to give light to the earth.

POLO: And it was so.

MAURICE: What? But there is light already shining, and there is nighttime. So why is it saying that the sun and moon are being created now? That cannot be right.

POLO: Yes, it does seem strange because even an uneducated person knows that heat and light come from the sun. So, I think that God intended it to be that way.

PRISCILLA: What do you mean?

POLO: I mean that God has shown us at the end of the Bible, when He describes heaven, that there will be no need for the sun, as His glory will shine everywhere. So, He is showing us that for the first three days of creation, the earth did not require the sun.

PRISCILLA: Mind-blowing!

POLO: Yes, mind-blowing. Day four in Genesis continues, and God made the two large lights. He made the brighter light to rule the day. He made the smaller light to rule the night. He also made the stars. God put all these in the sky to shine on the earth. They are to rule over the day and over the night. He put them there to separate the light from the darkness. God saw that all these things were good. Evening passed, and morning came. This was the fourth day.

PRISCILLA: So, what happens on day five?

POLO: Then God said:

GOD: Let the water be filled with living things, and let birds fly in the air above the earth.

POLO: So God created the large sea animals. He created every living thing that moves in the sea. The sea is filled with these living things. Each one produces more of its own kind. God also made every bird that flies, and each bird produces more of its own kind. God saw that this was good. God blessed them and said:

GOD: Have many young ones and grow in number. Fill the water of the seas, and let the birds grow in number on the earth.

POLO: Evening passed, and morning came. This was the fifth day.

MAURICE: So, birds like you, Priscilla, were created before us.

PRISCILLA: Oh, yes.

MAURICE: So, what happens on the sixth and last day of creation, Polo? I think it’s going to be a biggie.

POLO: Yes, a biggie. God said:

GOD: Let the earth be filled with animals, and let each produce more of its own kind. Let there be tame animals and small crawling animals, and wild animals.

POLO: And it was so, and God saw that it was good. Then God said:

GOD: Let us make human beings in our image and likeness, and let them rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky. Let them rule over the tame animals, over all the earth and over all the small crawling animals on the earth.

PRISCILLA: Make humans in God’s image and likeness?

POLO: Yes, in God’s likeness.

MAURICE: Well, it does say that humans will rule over the birds and animals, and the Bible tells us that God rules the universe, so organising and creating things is being a bit like God.

POLO: You could be right, Maurice. Genesis continues; So God created human beings in His image. He created them male and female. God blessed them and said:

GOD: Have many children and grow in number. Fill the earth and be its master. Rule over the fish in the sea and over the birds in the sky. Rule over every living thing that moves on the earth. Look, I have given you all the plants that have grain for seeds. And I have given you all the trees whose fruits have seeds in them. They will be food for you. I have given all the green plants to all the animals to eat.

POLO: And it happened. God looked at everything He had made, and it was very good. Evening passed, and morning came. This was the sixth day.

MAURICE: Okay. And then, on the seventh day, it says that God rested from His work.

POLO: And that gives us a sensible way of organising a week with one day of rest to prepare for the next week. Well, that is the story of the creation of the world from the Bible.

MAURICE: Some of that was difficult to understand.

POLO: Yes, Maurice, in Hebrews chapter 11, verse 3, it says, “It is by faith we understand that the whole world was made by God’s command. This means that what we see was made by something that cannot be seen.”
