PRISCILLA: Hello, I’m Priscilla. We are going to show you the story of Cain and Abel. Maurice, can you be Abel?
MAURICE: Marvellous!
PRISCILLA: I will be Cain and Polo; you can be the presenter.
POLO: My normal role then?
MAURICE: You’ll be good at that, Polo.
POLO: I will make a start then. Cain, what’s wrong?
PRISCILLA: I went and worshipped the Lord God, and he didn’t like my offering. That is just being picky.
POLO: Whatever did you take as an offering?
PRISCILLA: I’m a farmer, so I took some carrots, potatoes, and cabbages because that’s the stuff I’m harvesting at the moment.
POLO: Perhaps you didn’t take enough.
PRISCILLA: Enough! I could barely carry it all! Of course, there was enough!
POLO: Perhaps the Lord was expecting you to bring something else. Ah, your brother Abel is coming this way. We could ask him.
PRISCILLA: Don’t ask that creep.
POLO: Abel, did you go to worship the Lord your God today?
MAURICE: Oh yes, it was wonderful. I feel so full of peace.
PRISCILLA: Oh, great, just rub it in. The Lord has accepted you and your offering, but he didn’t like my potatoes, carrots and cabbages.
POLO: So, Abel, what did you take as an offering?
MAURICE: I’m a shepherd. So, I chose the best lamb I could, and I brought that as an offering.
POLO: So, if you had been a farmer, you would have taken carrots, potatoes and cabbages. Is that what you would have done?
MAURICE: Oh no, no, no, no. Do you remember what our parents told us? That is Adam and Eve.
POLO: Er? No, go on, tell us.
MAURICE: When Adam and Eve didn’t obey the Lord God, they put themselves against him.
POLO: Oh yes, they ate the fruit. They shouldn’t have eaten it.
MAURICE: Yes, but the Lord wanted to carry on meeting with them. So, to show them how bad they had been, the Lord God killed an animal! That must have been a real shock because up until that moment, no one and nothing had died.
POLO: That’s horrible, it must have shown them that they deserved to die because an animal lost its life instead of them.
PRISCILLA: What has this got to do with my carrots, potatoes and cabbages?
POLO: The Lord God was showing us that we all do wrong things.
MAURICE: Yes, and I wanted to approach him with no pride. And I wanted to trust him that he will make me clean and forgive all those wrong things I do.
PRISCILLA: What a load of rush! I thought I’d take my carrots, potatoes and cabbages to the Lord God and he will have to like it.
MAURICE: Yes, you thought! You are telling the Lord how to think! The Lord is God; you don’t tell him what to do.
PRISCILLA: Well, no one tells me what to do!
POLO: Do you know what happened? They both went out into the field, and Cain did a horrible thing. He was so angry with his brother Abel that he hit him, and he died from his wounds.
MAURICE: Oh no! Cain has killed me off! Erm, right. Speaking as me, Maurice, now. I think Cain was not interested in what God wanted. He didn’t want to surrender to God.
POLO: Yes, Maurice, Cain decided to bring an offering to God, but how he did that was not important to him.
MAURICE: It didn’t matter what God thought.
POLO: What about us? Do we choose to obey God?
MAURICE: Or do we only choose the things we want and refuse to do all of the good things?
